I did exactly what you are describing. My background:
I graduated with a degree in Economics and started working for a bank. After about 5 years I decided to switch to an accounting career and went back to school soley to take the classes that were necessary to sit for the CPA. My thought process was that if I was going to stay in the accounting field that the CPA was more important than a master's degree. In earning my economics degree, I satisfied all of the requirements except the accounting courses, similar to your buddy.
The only downside was that when going back to school, I had to take all accounting courses in the same semester which was pretty hard. You do not have the luxury of mixing some fluff courses like Marketing, Management, etc. so tell your friend it will not be easy.
But it worked out okay for me, I am a CPA and got 4 yrs big 4 experience under my belt. So it can be done.
