I understand this is hard to judge because each question is weighted
differently, because there are test questions, and because the exam may be
curved. But if you could say that you got 20 questions or less wrong, is there
a good probability of passing?

Hmmm.......

That is a good question.  I've often thought about this myself but I guess it's just pretty hard to conclude on, given as you have stated.  Indeed several questions are test questions, thown in the mix, that are not graded.  In addition say, you get more of the higher weighted questions right but you also get 20 questions wrong that are not as heavily weighted??  How can you really know??

Just really tough to decipher whether 20 is the cutoff or not.  I would assume that if I got 20 wrong, there is no way I passed......but when I start thinking all of the other variables that are in this test... I am not sure about that either.

The questions ARE weighted and the test is CURVED.

What is not the case with BEC, as is with the other tests, is that BEC does not get progressively difficult (i.e. adaptive) as you answer more questions correctly. Questions with higher level of difficulty have a higher point value because of the complexity of the question.  Whereas "quick" and simple questions have less weight value.

In addition, the fact that you also have pre-test questions in each test-let, makes it practically impossible to figure out whether you passed or not.  As you can witness in this forum, candidates many times think they failed, when in fact they did very well and vice-versa.

Hope this answers your question.

From what I understand FAR and REG are curved to help the candidate, but AUD and BEC make you work for it to pass.  I passed AUD with an 85, and I felt like I crushed everything, had time left over with the sims, and even used the research tab to double-check my answer.  Conversely, I got an 84 with FAR, and I thought that I got killed by the MC (had questions on governmental pensions, and things I had never heard of) and killed even worse by the sims (did the last couple of tabs in a few minutes just guessing and trying to maximize points).  I know for a fact that if FAR was graded like a college test, it would have been a C or D, but it was more than enough to pass and move on.

I'd say try to "survive" FAR and REG and get as much of an understanding that you can of those huge sections and work as fast as you can, but make sure to crush BEC and AUD out of the park, because you'll probably need to if you want to pass.
