Hey Guys,

Looking to begin testing for my CPA next year. I have a couple of questions in regards to the requirements in IL. I saw the website and checked everything.

You need 150 credits to be able to sit in IL.
I graduated with 128 credits (at least 40 in Business, but only 4 in Accounting), I therefore need 20 more accounting courses to qualify to sit.

I'm planning to take 4 accounting classes in the Spring of 2011 for a total of 12 Credits, and then make up 8 more in the Summer to qualify.

How do I know whether these will count toward CPA, the community college that I'm taking it at is a credited school, but I want to make sure it will count, prior to signing up for these classes.

Also, how feasible would it be to take 4 online Accounting classes? I'm always up for a challenge.

i guess the only thing you could do is verify that the community college is an accredited institution at this website: http://www.chea.org/search/default.asp

scroll to the bottom to agree to the terms and then it will take you to the database. as long as you follow the guidelines for education requirements on ilboa.org you should be fine.

as far as the online accounting classes go...it all depends on what's going on in your life and how challenging the courses are. really only you can determine that. i've never taken accounting classes online so i'm not sure how easy/difficult they would be.

I'm an IL CPA and I took many classes on-line. If the school is offering a regular class that offers regular credit, you should be OK.

The College of Dupage is the only one I know of in IL that has a full range of classes on-line and is affordable. I believe Intermediate Acct requires proctored exams. The other courses don't require proctored exams. The Illinois Virtual Campus might have other schools listed that offer an adequate curriculum.

That being said, if all you know is what you learned in school, you will probably fail the CPA exam miserably.

To  significantly improve your chances of passing when you have finished the required coursework, read the Wiley CPA review books while studying the comparable classes. Use the Wiley review books as your main resource for school. Texts are too verbose and ponderous compared to CPA review material, although Kieso is pretty good. Plus you have answered questions available to help you learn. Don't blow over anything, thinking you won't be asked about it or can afford to lose a point. You might get away with it, but will probably have to take that CPA exam again.

You might also want to use your 2009 and 2010 tax software and work the VITA practice individual tax returns, available from the IRS,  in order to get excellent experience with realistic individual tax returns. Line by line answers are available for 2009 tax law using 2010 problems at this time. 2010 answers should be available shortly.

Intermediate Acct usually takes 2 semesters to complete. Advanced and Govt usually follow intermediate. You can fit taxes and cost acct in there anywhere. Auditing takes 2 semesters also, but you only need 3 hours in Aud in IL to qualify for the CPA exam. Even with 6 semester hours, you will fail AUD without knowing the CPA AUD review book backwards and forwards .Personally, I think your schedule is a little tight.
