Hi All,

I cleared my exams in Feb 09 and have around 9 years of accounting experience in a software industry and have 120 Credit hours of education. Most state boards require 150 credit hours of education for CPA license. Can anyone help me what is the shortest and cheapest ($ wise) route to get to the 150 hours. Currently i am attempting my CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner) certification, will it suffice the 150 hrs,  Appreciate all for your help.

Regards

Kumar

No, the CFE exam won't give you more college credit.

The cheapest way would probably be to go to a community college.  They usually charge residents around $100-$150 a credit, so you're looking at around $4,000 and another year of education.

The 9 years of experience won't help you unless your direct supervisor was a licensed and active CPA, and your state accepts non-public accounting as qualifying experience.

I did read on this forum about some courses that you could take through FEMA that would transfer to college credit, but no one had ever tested it.  Search these forums for it and you can give that a shot.

Anyone know of a state that still only requires 120 hours?  Applying with one of those states will be your best bet.

Thanks koenigseggCC7, Out of my 9 years of experience 4 years was under a licensed and active CPA holder. Also can you give me more details about FEMA. Appreciate your help. I searched all the state board, the minimum requirement to get a license would be 150 hrs unless i misinterpreted something.

Sorry, but couldn't have looked too hard: https://nasbalicensingservices.nasbatools.com/display_page?i d=204

Colorado requirements: bachelor's degree (120 hours), with at least 24 hours in accounting, 3 hours in audit, and 21 hours in general business, plus 1 year of experience under an active CPA within the last 5 years.

Not sure if you have done the ethics exam, but that is required too.  Not too bad from what I've heard, my state is one of the few that doesn't require it.  I think it costs around $130.

And about the FEMA stuff, sorry, the search button is at the top.
