Hello folks,

I am Sonal and I am looking to work towards getting myself CPA certified. Following is my background:
1. I live in New York
2. I have done my bachelor in Management Studes, Masters in Banking and Finance and Company Secretary from ICSI; all from India.

Post my CPA certification, I  would like to get myself a job in one of the accounting firms here on a H1-B visa hopefully.

It would be very nice of all of you to guide and advice me on next steps and questions:
1. Step 1 should be getting my credits evaluated by FACS?
2. I understand from talking to most people that Delaware is the most lenient state in terms of credit requirements, is that the right state to get my certification from?
3. What if the FACS finds a lot of deficiency in terms of my credits, any suggestions how may I cover them up?
4. Starting from scratch what would be the total cost (all incl. estimate) until I get my certificate (considering I finish it in a single window)?
5. Any other pointers that I should be looking at before starting my journey?
6. How are the job prospects of CPA certified person but with zero work experience in the US?

You people are doing a great job helping each other out and I hope I could participate as well.

Thank you in advance.

Sonal

Sonal, you are right to start with getting the credits evaluated.  Where you are short to meet Delaware requirements, you can pick up community college hours in New York (there are many of the community colleges) and there are even a few online courses available (but I only did the community college method and didn't take anything online).  Then, in my opinion, to pass everything on the first try, you will need to pay for a review course.  You will have several options and they vary in price and quality.  Lastly, accounting is a very stable profession, and if you have other life experience from your prior life, that will help you stand out as a job candidate.  An expensive option (and I'm only mentioning this in case money is no object) is to get accepted into a highly ranked MACC program (master's degree in accounting) to kill all of the birds with one stone plus get a leg up for Big4 internship.  Otherwise it will be very unlikely to break into Big4.  But maybe that's not important to you, so no worries.  Good luck and keep lurking the forum here!

Hi

I am B.Com, Mumbai University and a Company Secretary. I am
trying for CPA from Delaware. Can u please suggest, if I am
eligible for any other state?
I understand, if I take up Delaware, I have to complete a
Federal tax course. Can anyone please help me with the
exact name of the Course and the college/ university that
offers this course online.

thanks

here is the info for your question

EDUCATION

Please read the Information for Applicants for a detailed description of education requirements in this jurisdiction. For additional information regarding licensure, experience and educational requirements, see the Delaware Board's website.

Candidates with education credentials earned outside the U.S. must have their credentials evaluated by the Foreign Academic Credentials Service (FACS). All educational transcripts and/or foreign evaluations are required to be submitted at the time of application.

Pre-Evaluation Application (optional service)

Note: On August 1, 2012 all first-time and re-examination candidates must meet the new requirements. No one will be accepted after August 1, 2012 with an associate degree. Also, first-time and re-examination candidates must have 24 semester hours in accounting courses.

Hello,
My situation is similar to Ketki and Sonal. I did my Bcom and CA from India and wish to pursue CPA from California.
Prior to getting my foreign credentials evaluated ,I would be happy to know if anyone with a similar educational background has been successfully admitted to the course by the California state board.
Also can anyone suggest any other State board that is more likely to consider Indian degrees.
Need to point out that I have not done my MCom...so Im a little worried about this.
Thanks in advance.
