Hello! This is Elaine, and I recently "graduated" from a
university in California. Great to meet you guys. I am
planning to get a CPA license, but was wondering about a
few things.
I was an economics major and took two accounting
(financial and managerial accounting) classes. Therefore
I need more accounting credits. I do believe that I have
filled my other 36 business units with my econ electives.

I was thinking about taking the CPA exam for Maine state
as it doesn't require any academic credits to sit for the
exam, pass the exam, then take community courses to
switch it to California's CPA license. Because it's an
uniform exam, the exams for different states will be the
same. Here goes my question #1: Is this a possible plan?
I am in kind of a hurry to pass the CPA exam.

And, also, I am planning to take Becker review courses.
But I do have summer school to finally finish off my
degree-- this is why I put "" in "graduated." The summer
classes are about 6-12 hours a week, and then there will
be some time spent to study for them. Question #2: Do you
guys think studying for both summer classes and CPA will
be reasonable? I researched and was told that FAR should
be challenged first as it's the hardest.

As you guys can see, I am pretty much just starting in
this CPA exam business. I'd appreciate every comment and
advice that you guys can offer! You guys are true heroes
for going through/having gone through this rough hike.
Thank you so much for reading, and please whisper words
of wisdom for me. :) Carpe diem!

Without the accounting backround, Becker may seem "fast" for you.  You may want to finish summer school first.

I would be very careful to assume you can register and sit under a different state and then just transfer the scores to CA for your license. I think you may want to research that a little...

I also think that not having an accounting background is going to make this very very difficult for you. Becker is pretty fast paced and assumes you are "reviewing" most of the material after having learned it more in depth in college. I personally think you should focus on getting the accounting credits you need and then worry about this exam.

If you purchase Becker materials now and realize you are not ready (very likely), the materials will expire and you will really have wasted your money. Be sure to really think this through before spending any money.

Elaine,

I would buy a review book and see how difficult it seems for you. As most have indicated, the courses may be a bit fast for you. But if you spend $20 or $30 for a book on one section of the exam and it is a bit over your head, then you are not out a few thousand. If you are comfortable with the material, then consider the review course. I am reviewing with the Wiley books, they seem to do a pretty good job. It seems to me that AUD and REG will be the toughest for you, followed by FAR (since you have some accting classes), and BEC should be the most familiar, given your econ degree.
