I am new to the forum, but i am curious on all the topics discussed. I am interested to know why does everyone seem to talk about the Big 4 so much? Sure I understand it's a great place to work, but I think it's extremely competitive to get in. Are there any people who want to become Accountants NOT have Big 4 aspirations? I've never understood why students get so motivated when there are recruiters on campus its not like they give you the job automatically. Not trying to talk bad on the Big 4 because i admit it's a great place to work, but I just seem to have no motivation on wanting to work for that place given the fact i want to become an Accountant someday but not make it that big of a deal of just focusing on these top notched places. I am more into getting a CPA firm office place job, or any small, or medium level sized company and move up that way. My intention is to getting my CPA sometime in the near future, but I am the minority in which I don't get too hyped up for any of those "big shot" jobs. So yeah it's pretty strange, I hear all the stories of people wanting to work for these hard competitive firms instead of exploring options in less paid, but still respectable places. Can someone explain to me why does this seem to be the case?

-Big 4 tends to pay more than other firms.
-Big 4 tends to have better benefits and perks (ie. they give you a smartphone)
-Big 4 clients tend to be the biggest companies in the world.
-Big 4 experience opens up a lot of opportunities. Many large companies require Big 4 experience.
-Big 4 firms market themselves to students more so than others. The training they provide is also better than most firms.

The only advantages of working for a smaller firm is lesser hours and you won't be as specialized in one area.

thanks for your response, this is something
i've understood all along. Maybe my question
should have been what happens to all the
people who don't make it to the big four?
Since it's so competitive, i can imagine lots of
inteligent and of course less inteligent
people losing out time and time again. But
yeah the big 4 understandably is like
reaching the promised land. Please let me
know if anybody knows where those who get
rejected from the big four usually go to this
goes for non accounting majors and
accounting majors wanting to be
accountants

In my undergraduate program, accounting majors that didn't go into the Big 4 did the following:

  • Went to a regional or local CPA firm
  • Became an entry-level fund accountant (State Street)
  • Went into large corporate audit programs that recruit directly out of undergrad (Bank of America, Fidelity)
  • Pursued a career in a different field that they had dual-majored in (finance and information systems being the most popular)
  • Went to law school
I cannot speak for any of these experiences (I went to Big 4) but perhaps there are others on this board that have these jobs and can provide more input?

interesting, you're of course assuming
students with great gpa's at good schools am
i right? Those positions are actually pretty
good with just a bachelors degree. I was
assuming specially these days with the tight
job market that one had to get a bookkeeping
job and then start moving up but wow the
positions you listed are those just the 3.5 gpa
and up type of people or with any gpa as long
as it's a bachelors in accounting? I hear all the
stories of high gpa's, good schools, and
pursuing the cpa exam thats why iam curious.
