When should an auditor withdraw from an engagement compared to issuing a disclaimer?

Hey there,

I'm studying for audit right now. Becker is not very clear on this issue and almost uses both possibilities interchangeably? Are there specific situations when an auditor should rather withdraw from the engagement instead of issuing a disclaimer of opinion or vice versa? Or can the auditor simply choose to do either one?

I would appreciate specific feedback including reference to AICPA, PCAOB, or GAAP promulgations.

Thanks

If the F/S are false, fraudulent, deceptive or misleading
withdraw.

You would disclaim if there is a major scope limitation or lack of independence on the auditors part. You would withdrawl if management is unethical, fradulent, deceptive or completely unwilling to make changes to their financials to clear up mistatements.

I always think of it as a disclaimer relates to an auditor not being able to perform, whereas a withdrawl would be caused by management. Hope that makes sense, I thought Becker covered it well......

Thanks for the clarification. I just hope there won't be a question where both possibilities appear.

Good luck to you guys on your remaining exams. Can't wait for this to be over and get my life back.
