I have passed the FAR, AUD, and BEC sections of the CPA exam but I have failed the REG section 3 times (71) (69) (72).  I have studied using Becker's self study software and passed the other three sections on my first try but I can't seem to get over the hump.  On my performance summary I have been scoring Stronger on the M/C and Weaker on sims.  I just purchased the Gleim Online Course hoping it will get me over the hump.

Any study tips would be appreciated!!

I had issues with REG and failed the first time with a 69. I purchased Wiley Software 2012 and did every MC as well as every MC for Becker.  I got to the point that I was doing 700 to 1000 questions a day, and each time I could just look at the answer and understand why is right or wrong.  The key that helped me though, was that I also spent a good two weeks doing every single Simulation (even though at first it may be wrong you learn a lot by doing them over).  I did this in both the Wiley, which has about 20 and also the Becker which has a ton (do each one on the software even the older ones).  I did purchase the Gleim Simulation Wizard, but honestly I felt the Wiley and Becker were sufficient.  Also with the Gleim wizard you can only do the problems 3 times which was annoying.

After doing this for 2 months, I breezed through the MC in 50 minutes and I saw 3 Sims that were pretty much exactly like what I practiced. The other 2 that I didn't see before we pretty easy to figure out since I was used to the format. Finished the test in 2.5 hours and my score jumped to an 89 and I was done :).

Remember this is your last exam so you want to be as far away from the "passing curve" to not have to retake it again. So if it means taking extra time to study I would suggest you do so. You are very close. Hope this helps.  Good luck!!!

Thank you very much for the advice.  I very much appreciate it.  I'm usually very confident but recently I have been second guessing myself.

I have been working the Gleim M/C questions but I prefer Becker's software.  Gleim's questions are much harder and very much detailed oriented, maybe a little too detailed (which can be a good and bad).

I am not worried about the M/C questions as I have scored stronger than passing candidates on every test.  If I can just score comparable on the sims I should be ok.  I thought Becker's sims would be sufficient but on my last two exams the sims that I saw on my exam have been nothing like I studied with Becker.  I don't know if it's just bad luck or that Becker's sims are outdated.

On my last two exams I received sims combining percentage of completion method, completed contract method, and 1250 recaptured and unrecaptured depreciation.  Both exams had the same sims.

Did you think Gleim's sims were helpful or should I maybe consider looking at Wiley's sims?

Also, I am not sure whether to study for a month and half and take the exam sometime in mid August or just cram and take it end of July?  Any thoughts?  My confidence is a little down at the moment.  My FAR exam expires in October so I have another two chances at the Reg exam but would like to get it over with on my next sitting.

I look forward to hearing from you.

George

I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe sometimes the SIMS mix other topics.  For example, on my final exam I had items that were pretty FAR specific.  My suggestion is practice as much sims as you can just build your confidence.  Trust me dude I know how you felt, but don't worry about your failing grade just pretend you are starting from scratch. I would try every SIM possible.  The Gleim is 100 bucks so just do them over and over again.  It will really pay off.  I know you had stronger in the MC, but i did also.  Ask yourself this question, when you see any number of MCs can you do them quickly without paper, can you understand the answer right away by just looking at the question?
