I have been thinking of pursuing CPA. I am 35 years old.
I hope you would
not mind me asking some questions for the same.

1) It was 14 years ago I last studied Accounting--back in
1998 March to be precise. I have some books:
a)Fundamental Financial Accounting concepts 6th edition
by Thomas P. Edmonds et al,.
b)College Accounting 18th edition by Heintz and Parry
c)Intermediate Accounting 15th edition by Stice et al,.
d)Cost Accounting 6th edition by Brock, Herrington

Do you think it is best to thoroughly brush up all the
concepts from these books for 6-8 months and then pursue
a review course from Becker or Yaeger. First take up the
FAR and then read the Auditing and Assurance services
-10th edition by robertson and Louwers.

I got my Bachelors in Accounts in India with a 3.78
GPA(as evaluated by the WES-World Education Services). I
worked for 10 years in England and Scotland for a Major
Restaurant Chain as Restaurant General Manager after I
pursued Hotel Management course there.

Right now I am based in Virginia state, close to Roanoke.

You think it is the way to go as far as preparing the CPA
with first going through all the above books and
appearing
in the order of FAR,AUD,BEC,REG.

I have got no clue what is in BEC or REG.

Is there anything I am missing or a better plan you might
suggest to adopt. Please advise. Great forum and it is
tremendous help to everybody.

Right now, I being on a dependent visa, staying home and
taking care of my 2 year old son, I have time. My wife
works and has a good job in Hospital.

Many thanks for your time.

Hi Nitin...good for you for asking all these questions.   As I am sure you are
realizing becoming a CPA takes getting lots of information so that you can
make the best choices. The first step, because your education is from
outside the U.S., is figuring out which state will accept you to write. Note
that even with your WES evaluation, many states that used to accept certain
types if Indian BComs are no longer doing so unless you have additional
education.

As far as preparing goes, a good review course should be all that you need
to use to get ready for the exam, using outdated textbooks would not be
the most efficient way to get ready.

If you would like help through the process, please email me directly,
regards, L.A.

Most states now require the 150 credit hrs to sit for the exam. A typical Bachelors Degree is about 120-126 credits. Make sure what the requirements are for your state and if you have enough college credits to even sit for the exam.

Also, After passing the exam, there is the experience requirement varied by state. In my state (PA), we need 2 years of experience with a Bachelors (phased out from 2012 due to 150 credit hr rule. only apply to anyone who passed atleast one section before 2012) with atleast 800 hrs in attestation. If you have a masters or atleast 150 credit hrs then 1 year experience with atleast 400 hrs in attestation. I passed all the sections but the experience factor is killing me because , i work as a accountant for a private company and not in Auditing, so my experience dont count.
