My goal is to become a CPA and work in public accounting.
Unfortunately, I have a less than traditional career
path. University was something I did off and on, usually
at night, while I worked 40 hours a week doing A/P and/or
A/R work for a small company. I graduated this past
December with a Degree in accounting, and I am in my mid
30's.

For the past several months I have been taking weekend
classes in order to prepare for the CPA exam (I have FAR
scheduled for Aug. 4). For personal, and professional
reasons, my employer is in the dark about my aspirations.

I didn't participate in the recruiting process at my
local University, now I'm at a loss of where to go next.
I've been applying for various Staff Accounting
positions, usually at local firms, but I'm not getting
anywhere, only a handful of interviews here and there.

I'm open to working in the corporate sector, anything to
move beyond simply being a clerk. I'm just at a loss of
how to go about doing it. Do I continue hitting the
online job boards (usually indeed.com)? Or am I missing
something?

Well, it sucks that you missed out on on campus recruiting. Online sites
are hit and miss in my experience and from what I've seen.

At this point I'd focus on networking and passing the CPA exam.
There's really not that many options left unfortunately. Did you get
yourbachelor or master degree?

It was my Bachelor's that I completed end of last year.
While I prefer a public accounting position, I am open to
working in the private industry.

I'm quite eager to move on, and I am unsure if I should
mention to potential employers that I am planning to take
the CPA exam. Friends tell me I should leave it off, as it
may scare employers.

I am a CPA working in the corporate industry.  The license has not given me a competitive advantage at my company.  Additionally, i want to get out of the company and everyone has rejected me despite reaching the level of Assistant Vice President.  So right now i am frigging frustrated and regret having the CPA license.  I will let it expire as it has caused me more problems and money than benefits.
