Hey All!

I want to know your opinions and advice on how to start an accounting career with a low cumulative GPA (2.85) and major (2.5). I will be graduating this December from a high ranking university with 150 credits with a degree in accounting and finance. I plan to sit for the CPA exam soon after. What are the chances of landing an accounting position upon graduation? I have a very low GPA, but have held an accounting internship for over a year now and have a lot of leadership experiences.

Any advice, thoughts, opinions on what steps I should take, what accounting firms I should look at, or whatever else will be greatly appreciated!

you just tell them that your GPA is 3.0 or higher if they ask you. it depends on where you apply. i suggest you try a regional firm. big 4 seems hard unless you tell them that your GPA is 3.5 or higher and they won't verify it.

sometimes GPA means nothing. my firm had an employee who had 3.8 GPA in MAcc and passed CPA exams within 3 months. but that person is the biggest headache in the firm. he is just damn lazy at his job, and he can't even reconcile the balances.

One way your GPA can be forgiven is if you pass the entire CPA Exam. Even then, it may not be.

Another way is to earn a good GPA in a master's program.

It's all a function of time, effort, & money.

Not to be pessimistic, aren't most MACCs competitive and require at least a 3.0 GPA to get in?  I guess if you had a good GMAT, that could offset it.

Depends on a lot of different things. I got into a low ranked Macc with
an undergrad gpa of 2.8.

I would suggest a few things:

-Rock the GMAT (mine was 650)

-Have a good story for the essay. It needs to show maturity and growth.
If not, then you're probably SOL.

-Coming from a high ranked undergrad will help.

-Find a Macc that's not ultra competitive, but still gets recruited by the
firms you're looking for (big 4, F500, etc.).

Once you get in the Macc, work ur butt off, get good grades, volunteer,
join an accounting student organization, amd network. Do all that and
you'll have the pick of the littter.
