I just had a question about tax return filing. I have a sister whom i financially support- all of her food, clothing, rent, etc. i pay for. She is in college. however i do not pay for her college education since she gets funding from FAFSA (she qualified based on the income of my mother who claimed her in her tax return in the previous years.) i supported her all year last year and also this year. can i claim her as a dependent on my tax return then? will it affect her FAFSA scholarship if i was the one who claimed her and not my mother anymore? please give advice on this matter. thank you!!!

You can claim her as your dependent.  The information you provided is enough to do that. Her getting the FAFSA does not disqualify her from being your dependent.

Xavier16,

You should take a look at the document linked below.  You will see that there are factors other than what you have provided thus far that you will need to consider.  Pay particular attention to pages 25 - 35, the Table 3-1 on page 26, and look at the index for other references to dependents.

As to your question regarding FAFSA, dmatharu apparently understood you to be asking about your sister's FAFSA impacting your ability to claim her as a dependent.

However, it appeared to me you were asking about your claiming her as a dependent impacting her FAFSA scholarship.  I think you are right to be concerned, and should look into that further.

to dmatharu and hillbillyLawyer, thank you so so much for your replies! as far as dependency tests, i know i pretty much qualify as her dependent. anyway, i called FAFSA and they said that my claiming her in my tax return will not have an effect on her FAFSA application since they just solely base it on the parents' income even if the parents cannot claim the student as a dependent. so thanks again!!!
