A friend of mine took FAR yesterday and was working on her second simulation. She ran out of time and could not hit the "Done" button and got automatically logged out when the time limit was over. Is her work on the second simulation automatically saved even though she did not press the "Done" button?

My understanding is that it saves it for you, but I don't have anything official to point to on that...

I am 99% sure it saves it for you since the same thing happened to me on both FAR and REG

All the exam that I took I never hit done on the last testlet. Don't worry it has been saved.

Yes, it's automatically saved. That happened to me on the second sim, too. And, I passed.
