What is your background in accounting, you are going to have to be much more specific.  Did you get an accounting major?  Whether you did or not, how many hours do you have under your belt in accounting?

I ask because you have to have 150 to get license and roughly 134 give or take a couple hours to take the exam generally speaking.

As far as studying, you need to spend 3 hours on here reading posts about the different study materials and make your best judgement.

If you want to spend 1000$ then you can get all types of DVD's books, audio books, etc.  If you want to do it cheap you can just buy Wileys Book for 50$ on Amazon and hope that is enough to get you a 75% on exam.  With a weak background in accounting you may need more material than just Wiley.

There are no shortcuts...spend some time reading all the material that you can buy on here and read the reviews on here.  All in all, it does not matter what material you buy, it matters how hard you study and how effectively you study.

I have Masters in Commerce in 2003 then worked for 5 yrs ,but accounting was never my cup of tea.I would just manage to reach the border line .

I have the study material from Becker , attended their lectures in Jan 2009.

I just need to start studying , i would actually need to strengthen my basic accounting  which is very bad.Can you suggest me some material other than CPA to start with , so that i can start from the scratch.

I can only give you my advice....

I wouldnt worry about getting easier textbooks, i would get wileys FAR
textbook and get dirty.

You are smart enough to know assets = liab. + se so the whole book
is just learning debits and credits mostly.

If you dont understand something there is someone that asked the
question before, so you can google it.

For the hard stuff like lt construction and pensions...you probably arent
going to learn any better than in wiley or becker maybe.

Honestly i think without much acc background i could pass FAR. It
would just take another half month of studying.

Jump in the deep end!!!!

new_bird,

Do not get disheartened.I am in probably in the same boat as you.I do not have an accounting degree and I went to local community college to get my accounting credits, all in all I have 30 credits in accounting and 30 in business courses.Even after having no accounting background I could pass all 4 parts of CPA exams in a 11 month period,I skipped two windows in between.I did it with two kids.I feel if I can then anyone can.

Hard work pays off. When I went to my first job I did really well in taxes,in my second job my manager was very very strict and he was used to my senior who was well trained and had 5 years of exp.He wanted me to be at her level within 5 weeks. He knew I am learning well but he had a habit of shouting. Also some employers (mostly non-american) usually get you in and promise some salray but in actuality they do not want to pay you at all and just want to give some exp.Sometimes they get annoyed and you end up kicking them off.In my other jobs I did reasonably well and I would say each job was a learning exp and I learned new stuff everytime.I have been able to build up considerable amount of an exp.Keep up your hopes, where there is a will there is a way.Hundred thousand candidates sit for CPA exam and 15000-20000 eventually pass all four parts which is roughly 4-5% a year.

Take an example of some graduate degree......ok lets say Masters in Pharmacy.96 different schools offer this degree all around the US and each year around 46000 students are enrolled into his program and finally alll of them pass and graduate so lift up your spirits because you are doing something in which you are competing against a lot many who are extremely good...some of them are MBA students from good schools,Charted accountants from different nations, accounting majors who have a very high GPA.So CPA is something that some get eventually not all like I gave you an example of that graduate degree in Pharmacy.I am not under mining the capability of anyone but CPA is not a regular courseware ,its a test of your aptitude and how fast you can think.3 out of 4 sections are adaptible.I mean your exam will become more difficult as you go on,like we have GMAT and GRE but that is just 1 test and that too school level, this one is college level and 4 sections that test every aspect of you.
