Does anyone else feel like they learned more studying for the CPA exam than in their entire undergraduate college experience.

I feel like the whole point of college for accountants, (Other than being a massive holding tank) is to prep us for the CPA exam.

We should throw out all the conventional books and just get Becker, Yager, or what have you.  I learned more from my Becker course than the 10 or so classes I took as an undergrad in accounting.

The information is clear and to the point.  Plus it would prepare you for the CPA exam, letting colleges boast better success rates of their students.

Why do they not do this?!

You shouldn't compare both because one has a narrower focus while the other takes a more holistic approach to accounting. Don't limit the accounting profession to becoming a CPA, forensic accountants are in great demand etc.

This has to be a joke because if I want to research a particular Auditing topic I wouldn't grab my Becker book.

I agree with the first post.  Studying for FAR, I learned more about accounting and how to study then I ever did in college.  3 months of studying makes college seem pointless.

Becker was better because my college classes already prepped me on 75% of the material. My financial courses were awesome in preparing me for over half of the FAR exam, my governmental class prepared me very well for FAR 8 & 9, my business law class taught me every single thing in the second half of REG, my tax class taught me over half of the first half of REG, my econ/cost/tax/financial class taught me about 80% of what was in BEC (disregarding IT, that's just mostly common sense), the material was there for my audit class to help me with the AUD exam, but my teacher sucked so it wasn't much help.

Basically, had you not gone through college it wouldn't be as easy to study for these tests. Just ask anyone who is coming from a nonaccounting background (ie lawyer) on how easy this stuff is to study for.

All first try, all with Becker. It can be done.

I had deceint FAR professors at best.  The post was directed at FAR only (I should have said that)

My audit and tax teachers were awesome and it made Becker just a review.

I feel like Becker teacher FAR much more straight forward than any of the professors at my school.  I always had a very tough time with those classes.  I was an "A" student in tax and audit, but lucky if I could pull off a B- in my Intermediate 2 and 3 accounting courses, and each course only covered about 2 or 3 chapters of the material found in Becker so you would think it would be easier, but it wasn't

Plus my total study time was maybe a month (off and on), where my accounting degree has taken one hell of a lot longer.

My point is Becker teaches the basics great.  I am going for my masters degree now and find myself applying what Becker has taught me to my Consolidation and Non Profit classes rather than what my teachers are teaching.
