i was just curious? i am taking the cpa exam now and just passed FAR. i am currently working as a cost accountant for a private company, so i have NO public accounting experience. Say, i pass all 4 sections, when applying for a job at a firm, do i apply for intern/ "campus" job since i have no public acct experience? when ever i check the big 4 website either they want college students who didnt take exam but will be pursuing("campus") or experienced with yrs of public accounting.

i feel like if i take the campus job, then i will be taking a pay cut from my current position. but i need 3200 hrs (2 yrs) of public accounting experience to get the licensure in my state (PA).  are any of you in my boat?

Campus means 1st year staff, not an internship.  They say campus because college seniors usually interview for 1st year staff jobs in public accounting on campus a year in advance.  No reason why they won't look at you too though if you passed the exam already.  Also, don't think you have to pass before you can apply.  If you were to get hired, they would probably pay for the rest of your exam fees.

Not sure if you live in the same area as your college, but if so, check with their career services or equivalent department, most have really good connections with local and regional accounting firms if you don't get anything with the big 4.  I know my firm in Syracuse would kill to hire someone with any kind of experience right now.

Depending on your location, 1st year staff in the big 4 have salaries between 45-55k a year.  However, the work expectation is probably around 2500 hours or more (40 hrs x 52 weeks = 2080 hours for reference).

So to answer your question, apply for the campus position.  It is for full-time 1st year staff positions.
