To my fellow Floridians:

I just spoke with the FICPA regarding that pesky 1 year deadline to apply for the CPA license after passing the exam. I was told that there will be a legislative session held in July to increase the one year waiting period to a 3 year period to get your work experience. It would be great if they changed it to 5 years like some other states but I guess 3 is still good.

When the state added the one year work experience requirement, they failed to extend the application period for the license. The problem many CPA candidates ran into was that many applicants ended up in law school and thus their grades expired.

So, Florida candidates can breath a sigh of relief because that 12 month license application period will be extended and CPA grades will expire after 36 months if a license is not applied for.

With all that said, DBPR is a complete joke. I had to call the FICPA to get information about this topic. All I was told by DBPR was, "We cannot interpret rules. Please write a letter and petition the Board for clarification." They then directed me to the DBPR website. Um, that's why I called in the first place because the website is not exactly clear.

You add great value to the boards, I appreciate you looking into that because from my experience with DBPR they dont want to help anybody, just give you the run around.

Yeah they do give you the runaround. I just call the FICPA if I want information because they are the next best source of information.
