Greetings all,

I recently completed my BA in Economics from Rutgers University and I am looking into becoming a CPA. I had no undergraduate courses in accounting while I was an undergrad (but was exposed to it in finance and other business courses) so I need to find the most efficient way to get my 24 required hours to meet the NJ requirement.  The problem is I would not be able to take these courses at Rutgers because the business school does not allow non-matriculating undergrads to take accounting courses. Also, I would not be able to afford to go to grad school at this point which further complicates my problem. Has anyone had a similar problem to me, and if so, what steps did you take to meet your state requirements? Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated! Thank you

-Nick

Hey Nick,

I graduated with an economics degree in 06 without accounting courses and got through the exam in 08. (Probably not the most efficient given I had some mishaps along the way.) I took the accounting courses at a community college. The courses were cheap and the teachers were much better than the teachers I had in college. I only paid $1,500 (tuition and books) to get all 24 units.

Simon,

What state did you get your CPA in? I live in NJ where I'm pretty sure I could only get my 24 units from a 4-year school but I could also take the exam in PA or NY if needed.  Thanks for the advice.

You are probably better off looking into PA. Currently, you need 24 credits total in Accounting, Finance, Business Law, Tax & Auditing. Look into Raritan Valley community college, Somerville NJ

They offer a number of accounting courses for about $300/course. Where are you in NJ/PA? I may be able to suggest other options also.

I'm in Cherry Hill, NJ...I can see the Philadelphia skyline from my balcony. I was actually looking into PA and taking the 24 credits I needed at a local county college while I seek out employment in or around Philadelphia. I was worried the PA board would not accept the extra 30 credits from county towards the CPA requirement because it is no clearly defined within the requirements.
