Hello everyone. This is my first post.

I am a 2008 BA grad majoring in Economics. Therefore, I have about 120-135 credit hours. According to the Illinois CPA board, all of my economics credit hours can be used for my business credit hours requirement.

Currently, I am located in Japan. For personal reason, I will be staying here for another 1-2 years. During this time, I want to take some online courses to fill my accounting credit requirement. Does anyone know of an Illinois institution that will meet my needs.

I know some NY institutions offering online accounting classes. One is Herkimer County Community College. They offer an all online associates degree in accounting. I am a newly admitted student there this spring. The non-resident tuition totals $243 USD / semester hour.

The other is Empire State College which offers upper level accounting classes. Their website is not the easiest to navigate though. I don't have a relationship with them at this time, though I plan on taking 3 or 4 upper level accounting classes there as a non-matriculated student starting in Fall, 2010.

Another possibility to consider is the University of West Florida. I know they offer an out-of-state tuition waiver for their online masters in mathematics program (meaning you pay the lower cost in-state tuition, about $200-250 per semester hour iirc). I do not know if this is a general policy or not though for all online coursework.

I know these aren't IL schools, but they are in the US, online and affordable, even for out-of-state residents. Hope they help you out.

I did a little searching and I found these online
accounting courses offered by Louisiana State University:

They are all less than $250/class. This seems highly
reasonable to me... any opinions?

I'm currently enrolled in the LSU classes (now $262 a
class...inflation), having majored in economics in
college. I've taken the intro course (2001) and am
currently enrolled in management accounting, intermediate
I, and tax.

I think the courses are great. They have a good online
system for getting & submitting assignments and checking
on grades. Two other factors:

1) They use pretty standard textbooks (e.g. Kieso for
intermediate), so I'm building up a decent library of
books. You can obtain inexpensive used books since they
tend to use editions that are just out of date. This
isn't much of an issue:

- some things like management accounting don't change
fast enough for editions to matter;

- some things like financial accounting change too fast
for any textbook to be completely up to date, so
regardless of the edition (assuming it's not too out of
date), you need to do your homework with primary sources
anyway.

2) The courses lean heavily upon Study Guides and
textbook practice problems. I learn by doing (vs. seeing
or hearing), so this is perfect for me.

Thanks begbie, good to hear they're legit. I also majored in economics in college and am thinking of taking some of these courses. Any opinions on how procotored examinations work through distance learning classes (I assume you have to go to a proctored exam center to take examinations)?
