I'm returning to finish my accounting degree (BS) and then in all probability go to a MAcc.  It has been many years since I've attended classes and my career in the interim has been in computer programming, not accounting.  Now, I only have a couple of courses needed to finish the degree - none of which are financial accounting courses.  I do need to refresh myself with the fundamentals though.

I still have my old Kieso Intermediate books. Mine are volume 10 and I understand they are now on volume 13.  Are these older ones good enough from a conceptual standpoint to use, or has so much changed in the past 7 or 8 years that I need entire new volumes - or is there a different book that would be recommended entirely?

If my current books are adequate for a fundamentals review, where could I turn for the specifics, like the latest GAAP rulings and - as I understand we're moving towards - the latest international standards?

Thanks in advance for any help.

As IFRS and GAAP have converged, there's been a fair amount of changes. I would suggest getting a new version of Intermediate Accounting for a refresher and/or reference.

In my undergrad we used Nikolai's newest version. It's a great reference book, but not easy reading if you're new to accounting. However, it does have great explanations and every chapter has some info on IFRS. it also references the new FASB codification for research purposes.

Another option would be to use Spiceland's Intermediate text. It's a little easier to read, but I didn't find it was as detailed as Nikolai's.

In regards to IFRS, I wouldn't worry too much about it. With all the most recent delays in the convergence, who knows when we'll adopt the international standards. However, most new texts nowadays all talk a bit about it.

You can use versions (any book) not earlier than 2009.
