hi guys,

I'm residing in Philippines but will go to Japan in Apr as an exchange student. I will be acquiring a student visa for a year. I'll be studying just for one sem, and I plan to intern at Big 4 (Japan).

AICPA announced that the CPA exams can be taken in Japan:

1. can foreigners with student visa take the CPA EXAM in Japan? it's not clearly stated.

2. I plan to take for VERMONT as I'm still a college student. is it possible to transfer my CPA scores to NY or CAL after graduating? If I plan to work in NY /CAL? (For the licensure)

3. I can speak KOREAN, JAPANESE, ENGLISH and I'm studying Chinese now, does language ability help alot as a CPA? is it better for me just to get the CPA cirtificate not the license ( want to work right after graduation, that's why I'm planning to take for Vermont) and just work in other countries? HELP!!!!:-(

The AICPA has stated that to write in international locations candidates need
to be residents or citizens of that country and you are right, they do not
state whether candidates with student visas will qualify. We will probably
not know until closer to the middle of this year.

In terms of which state you should write for please be careful in the state
that you choose. Depending on your education there maybe a state that
would give you the designation without work experience.

Hi,

There are many restrictions for taking US CPA exam in Japan from Aug 2011. As Leslie-Anne says, you need to be Japanese nationality/citizens  or American nationality. For foreigners to be able to take in Japan, you need to have stayed in Japan for a long time, which means you have an alien registration card in Japan.

Some Japanese USCPA review courses have listed useful info on their web sites, so you should check them out if you can understand Japanese.

I am sorry to ruin your feeling, but you would not likely to get an internship at big4s in Japan. They don't have such system here like the U.S. Besides, Japanese Big4s usually don't hire a person who hasn't passed Japanese CPA exam. They may hire USCPA holders for U.S. tax and audit work, but most of time they requires work experiences at Big4s. Passing USCPA exam and being able to speak English are not enough to work for Japanese Big4s.

But being able to speak, write, and read many languages is plus. Chinese language is hot in Japanese accounting industry right now because now we have many Chinese clients as well as Japanese clients in China.

Also, you may not able to transfer Vermont to NY/CA. NY&CA has 150 units requirements and you also need at least BS degree and 24 or so ACCT/business units. Unless you have satisfied these NY/CA requirements before applying to/passing the exam (I don't remember which is correct), you cannot transfer from Vermont.
