Hi guys, I am new here and I have been wondering what is the minimum gpa to be considered for an interview by the big four.

I am not an accounting major (BA in economics and minor in industrial engineering/operations research), but I really want to work for the big 4. I have been taking accounting classes at my current university (UC Berkeley) and have not been doing quite well actually (B+ in both intro and intermediate financial accounting). And my gpa is not that high either, 3.2 right now.

Also, I will not be applying for an internship this semester (my junior year) because I will be taking 2 accounting classes and 1 econ classes during my summer semester. My goal right now is to finish all my accounting classes so that I will be able to sit for the cpa exam.

Do you guys think I still have a shot with the big4?

For sure above 3.0; however, in this economy, I would say a lot of 3.5
resumes pile up to the ceiling, lower than 3.5 is getting harder and harder.

With 3.2 you have to make a good case for it, like hot experiences, and/or
working full time while going to school, etc... One suggestion is, pass the
CPA exam. That way, you are getting a higher chance. Hope this helps.

With the minimal facts that you presented, I would venture to say that you will not be selected for an interview.

How to boost your chances?

Resume:
  • Make sure it is formatted clearly and professionally (no errors!)
  • Showing you work or are heavily involved on-campus will make you look more attractive than a 4.0 student that only has to worry about getting good grades
  • If you list job experience or on-campus activities, focus on the people-aspect of it; people-skills = important

Non-resume:
  • Attend "Meet to firms" events to get acquainted with people at the firms
  • Attend firm tours or social events the firms put on, again to get to know the people and hopefully have them remember you
  • Get to know students that have done internships at these firms; learning about their experiences can help a lot in preparing you for possible interviews; more importantly, if these students accepted full-time offers, there is a chance they can recommend you for an interview
Good luck!

There is no reason that this should have been said. There is a lot of other things that the firms look for outside of GPA.

To answer your question, 3.0 is the requirement for Big4. If you have a higher GPA in your Major or Concentration classes, emphasize this.

You will most likely have to write a couple of essays when applying and these are a great time to sell yourself to the firm. Highlight all of the things that make you a great fit in a Big 4 company and downplay all of the negative things.

Networking is probably where you will see the most return to time spent.
