i've only worked at small firms with less than 20 people.  what is it like at big 4/regional?  lots of politics?  i always hear about the great training.  Do they go over gosystem, line by line tax return, etc. so you won't feel very lost when you prepare your first return? smaller cubical?

at small firms, managers/partners will walk over and ask me to do something for them, or i will come to them when i have nothing to do.  is it similar to big 4?  or are you always assigned to something and work more independently?

It depends on the office and the region. The larger offices will have larger clients. Also the larger firms have more resources and invest more in training, technology. They may also have their own proprietary programs. Depending on your level and the teams, you may have limited contact with managers and partners.

The benefits of a bigger firm is that you are exposed to more complex transactions and issues that the larger companies out there are faced with. You make a lot of contacts throughout your time working at a larger firm and you also will work with a lot of bright people. The drawbacks are long hours, high expectations, less compassion, stressful work environment. Working for the Big 4 is not for everyone.
