Well, maybe those weren't his exact words, but his message was very clear: if you don't get into the Big 4, you won't become a controller or see 6 figures when I asked him about the best path to becoming a high level manager for a company (I'm thinking this is my end goal). When I asked him, "what if I like another public accounting firm more and I get a better work-life balance there". He repeats, "go to the big 4" and smiled. When I asked him, "what if I don't get in". He says, "that's too bad".

I might be exaggerating a bit (again, he didn't exactly say this, but that was the message I got), but thoughts?

This guy seems egotistical.  He is just another windbag that is obsessed with six figures.  I get tired of the insinuation that "you are loser" if you do not make six figures.  Also, getting tired of the obsession with the Big Whore.

I disagree with your professor.  If you really believe him, then go Big 4, but you don't have to go Big 4 to become a manager or make six figures.  That's ridiculous.

Its a numbers game.  If you want a high level manager position making six figures, then your odds are better going through big four.

And if you're dropping thousands of dollars on a college education, you would be well advised to take those odds, assuming that is what you actually want (high level f500 manager position making six figures).

He is just being candid.  Because, make no mistake, it is "harder" to accomplish certain things taking one path over another.  And if you want an f500 manager position making six figures, you are making it harder on yourself taking the local 300 person CPA firm job over a big four job.

That's not to say you *can't* go from regional firm to international corner suite executive.  But if you are set on that goal, why would you make it more difficult on yourself?

He says the aforementioned, yet he is an accounting teacher...hmmm.
Pot, meet kettle.
