It was absolutely disgusting when I did my internship at a regional, 2nd tier PA (small office, ~30 people on my floor). There were plenty of back stabbing and spreading bad rumors to the partners, especially among those who still haven't got their CPAs after a couple of years. Is this just as bad at the Big 4 or it's better given the bigger size of the firm and people are more secure about themselves because they are probably smarter?

Haha, your funny. I was a EY alumni, left as a senior, and trust me, its MUCH MUCH MUCH worse. When i came in as a staff, i was trained in office politics by my Senior since day 1. You better spend about 40% of your time walking around the office, sucking up to sr managers, partners, mangers to get your self on good clients and be in their circle. Office politics constantly comes in because your Evaluated by your utilization rate. Meaning, if you get put in to a big client, like JP Morgan or Citi, you don't have to worry about finding your billable hrs / week bc the client can afford it. If your those unlucky ones, being stuck on a bunch of small engagements, your going to have to constantly go around the office asking for work and projects to meet the min. billable hrs. Sometimes your going to have a panic attack, cuz there's just not enuff projects to go around. Then after a while, you spend countless sat nights in the office wondering y ur there just because your manager is too dumb to make a realistic budget!

What is the "minimum" required billable hours per month in terms of percentage? Do they post everyone's billable hours publicly at intervals to keep the pressure up? Did you have to eat the hours if your manager set unrealistic budget?
How long is a typical engagement?
Is it easier to meet the billable hours if you do audit? AFAIK, the travel hours are counted as well.

Minimum" required billable hours at EY busy season was 55hr/week for the span of those months. But trust me, in order to charge 55 hrs of actual billable hr, you're going to have to put in 70-75 of real working hours at least. No they do not post everyone's billable hours publicly but those are sent to your "mentor" and you get called in if your lacking. Lolz, ofcourse, everybody here at big 4 eat hours. Just depend on how big of a dumba$$ your manager is and how big of a pssy he is to speak up to a unattainable project. I was talking about audit. Its much easier in Tax as they always have work. As for travel hours, don't even bother counting that in, it counts as misc.
