Is it possible to break into one of the Big 4, with a CPA
but an unrelated major?

- Political science major (heading into my senior year) at
top 25 university

That's what I was wondering too. Doesn't make sense. You
would need an accounting major to even get your CPA.

Yes it's possible to get in to Big 4 without being an accounting/econ/business major, but you do need to fulfill your accounting units some how. You can take it at your current school, at a community college, online college, whatevers. As long as it's accredited and approved.

That said, your best chance to get into Big 4 is during on campus recruiting. I think you need to have taken at least up to intermediate accounting to be really considered for interviews. If you delay taking the necessary courses to demonstrate interest in accounting until after college, it makes it a lot harder to break in. I finished intermediate accounting and was taking tax when I got my offer.

By the way, having a CPA without direct experience (if you've graduated already) does not really help you break into Big 4 or even find a job in a lot of instances. The CPA is only really useful if it's on top of experience. The reason is because all the Big 4 firms pushes employees to get their CPA or they can't get promoted past a certain point. That, in addition to high turnover, causes the job market to be flooded with CPAs with Big 4 experience.

I was a music major undergrad and went to get my mba in accounting. So you may want to try that. Although I will tell you even though you will have a masters degree in accounting it will still hurt your job prospects. (The #1 question I got in interviews was "What do you know about accounting if you majored in music?" and I was like uhh did you even see that part that says MBA IN ACCOUNTING ????) Although I tried to relate it to being more diverse (i.e. I will know more about your clients in the entertainment industry since I have lots of experience there, etc. But some didn't really care or see it that way.
