What is typically expected from a new hire for their first year in public accounting, specifically in Big 4 or a large regional firm? What are some good goals to establish? Is being competitive with one's peers useless, since everyone is in their "apprentice" year?

it's expected that you try to do the work and that you're friendly, outgoing, and inquisitive. First-years get a lot of hand-holding.

You're not pitted against your peers; in fact, you're expected to be collaborative. Compete against yourself to get better reviews so you can get on better clients or the clients you want, and get promoted faster.
