Hi all,

I have a quick question. I've seen competing requirements of the FL CPA.

Here's one:

  • Completion of 120 semester or 160 quarter hours as follows:
  • 24 semester or 36 quarter hours in accounting education at the upper division level which shall include coverage of auditing, cost and managerial accounting, financial accounting, accounting information systems, and taxation.
  • 24 semester or 36 quarter hours in general business education which shall include not less than the equivalent of 6 semester or 8 quarter hours in business law courses which include coverage of the uniform commercial code, contracts and torts.

But the Florida CPA site says this:

# Submit official transcripts evidencing completion of a baccalaureate degree, plus an additional 30 semester hours/45 quarter hours of education in excess of the baccalaureate degree to include 12 semester hours/18 quarter hours of upper division accounting and 15 semester/22 quarter hours of upper division general business courses.

I have an undergrad in an unrelated discipline and am enrolled in a masters. If I have to do what Becker says then I'm totally screwed. Can somebody elaborate for me?

The Florida Board of Accountancy spells out the requirements there, which
agree to Becker's. Note that you will need additional credits to become
licensed (36 accounting, 39 business).

Well crap. I'll have to do a whole bunch of business credits over and above my masters in accounting to qualify.

The first set of criteria you listed refers to the minimum requirements to SIT for the exam. The second set refers to the licensing requirements.

You need a bachelor's in Accounting to sit for the exam. You need 150 credit hours with 36 of those hours being upper division accounting and 39 general business credits to receive your CPA license. Along with that is your 1 year work experience in order to be come licensed. I hope that helps.

I believe your Master's in Accounting will cover your minimum requirements if you take enough courses. If you didn't take Economics, Statistics, etc., you will need to take those as as Master's student. You should also be able to enroll in undergraduate courses as a graduate student and that will help you out too. Truth be told, you have a long road ahead because you have many classes to take.
