Ok, so I graduate in December and I have emailed my resume along with other pertinent information to almost every CPA firm in and around Nashville and I have received very few responses. It has been about 2 weeks since my last wave of emails went out. I have received a couple responses basically saying I looked like a good candidate, but we are not hiring, but mostly I have received no response. What should I do? Academically I have done everything I possibly can to get a job right as I get out of school. I have a 3.7 overall GPA, a 3.85 in accounting and I have passed 2 parts of the CPA exam. What else do they want from me?

I'll tell you what you HAVEN'T done. You didn't mention that you handed your resume on to anyone you have in your network in an accounting firm!!! There have been quite a few articles written on this of late. Many HR folks say don't even bother to apply to a company unless you have an "in." While I wouldn't go so far as to say that, I really urge you to hit up college alumni, old friends in accounting firms, ppl you know who have good stature in their firms and get you resume passed along. A referral from a "somebody" inside a company goes a very long way trust me. Are you a minority of some sort? A woman? Look up accounting events in your area even if you are NOT a minority GO to their events and network!!!! Be assertive about it. I've seen asians at NABA (National Association of Black Accountants) events and white guys at ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting)! It happens more than you would believe. I will send you links to pics if you have any doubt.
There are ppl in accounting organizations you could tap into and network your way into a job! Most importantly I have found that simply telling anyone you encounter about your goals and what you've achieved thus far can open doors. Two parts of the CPA and not yet graduated is great! Congrats! You really do have to network your way into a firm. Talk to anyone who would listen and try as best you can to have no shame about it! Best of Luck to you!

If the firms aren't hiring this won't help, but you could try dropping your resume off at the various offices in person. Our firm gets resumes by email and fax, but they don't stand out like someone stopping in. Being a small firm there are not a lot of new hires here, but when someone is needed, I would bet the person who stopped in to drop off their resume and have a brief conversation has a better shot than the email applicants.

What's a shame is I have a sister and father that are CPA's in different firms and they say they can't help me out right now. My fathers place is smaller and just really has no openings, but my sisters..Is where I thought I had an "in" at the whole time I was in school. I talked to them this summer and everything seemed like a go for an interview this fall, but a couple weeks back I got an email saying that they are no longer hiring siblings and other immediate family members. I really wanted to work there too.

Now that is a shame! Too much nepotism going on huh? Then it looks like you might need to volunteer at your father's place if only for the experience. Do you have internship experience?
