Hey all, I need advice.

I just graduated in April and the company I work for assured me that I was a keeper with advancement opportunity. I am currently a clerk in private manufacturing company. Well two weeks ago when I pushed them into a corner, they informed me that they have nothing for me.

Shame on me for not looking while I was graduating. I have updated my resume, and made a list of regional and small firms. I have a couple questions.

Do CPA firms do off-season hiring?

I plan on calling every HR person twice a week until I get an interview. What will help me get their attention?

Is being 29 going to hurt my chances even futher?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, CPA firms do off-season hiring.....however generally not for entry level staff as you would be. Your best bet would probably be to get an employee referral if that's possible.

Other than that, I would suggest targetting firms that do not participate in on campus recruiting. Larger firms probably won't look at you when you have no experience and they've likely already filled their entry level staffing needs from campus recruiting.

Thank you for the advice. I figured as much, but you can always hope.  I guess I'm just really disappointed in myself for putting all my eggs in one basket.

I am reaching out to friends and family to help me network. One said he can probably get me an interview in a top 100 firm (Which I am thrilled about). Would interviewing now though really be beneficial?

I'm guessing my best bet might be to try to get hired next year as an entry level through the normal avenues? In the meantime I will definately give your advice a shot and call smaller tax and CPA firms that do not do campus recruiting. I'm just worried also that my age is going to inhibit my chances the longer I wait.

Which brings up my next question. How do I do campus recruiting when I'm not in school anymore?

Thanks again

Talk to your school and see if they will let you participate. If you have a good reason maybe they will, it's worth a try. I wouldn't worry about your age, that's not something you can control.

You can also watch out for off-campus recruiting that the Big 4 do from time to time (it would be in the Spring when they've realize they didn't hire enough people in the Fall.) I managed to land an interview with pwc that way (though didn't get an offer.)

If your school has a career services website where firms can post jobs, that's where you would find it. At least for my school, I still have full access to this website even after I have graduated, and the 1st round interview is done by phone. So you don't even have to be a current student anymore.
