Hello all. I've been working with a Big four firm for the
last 2 months and I feel like I'm struggling a lot. I miss
details, miss deadlines, and I feel my work quality is not
as high as they expect. For those in public accounting, how
did you feel the first year? What would you recommend?

I would recommend not missing details, not missing deadlines and improving your work quality.

When you're stuck ask for help right away. Always
double-check everything before you send it in. Refer to
previous workpapers, etc. Try to put in extra work if
it's a case of you having trouble with software or
something else technical like that.
Unfortunately, once they think you aren't meeting
expectations it can be really tough to rebuild their
trust in you, so I would say if things don't improve in a
few months you may want to see about finding a different
job.
I speak from experience on this, I was a Big 4 washout.
In the end I decided that public accounting wasn't for me
and thankfully I recently got a position in governmental
accounting [basically like a staff accountant.]

Well I miss deadlines but I don't miss details. I feel this allows me some slack as people around me would prefer a good product late than a bad product on time.
I want to leave soon as I don't like the work. Hows being a staff accountant for government badcpa?

I actually haven't started yet, but I do have a firm offer
and a start date. It's for an agency that is involved in
healthcare so I'm hoping it will open up opportunities
elsewhere even if I don't end up sticking around with this
agency.
