I'm about to pick my major for school and I just had some questions about the Accounting field.  I always hear that Accountants make good money, but how come everything I see puts Accountants at $50-60k average? I know that is above the average American's salary, but I was wondering how possible it was for an Accountant to make six figures (Are CPAs the ones who make the most?).  Also, how important is an MBA if you passed the CPA Exam? Is it something you should do just because it would only benefit you or is it really not worth it at all?  Thank you all in advance.

You make six-figures by 1) get a CPA license. 2) Work for a Big 4 firm 3) go work for a publicly traded company and move into a director/controller position.

Senior Analysts at my company (almost fortune 500) make $70k-ish + bonus.

kstateksig, I would change the order. 1. Work for a Big4 2. Get your license. It's much more difficult to get into Big4 if you are not a student.

today you need cpa and mba if you want to make it to the top financial spot and make the 6 figure incomes.  today and future cfos need to understand more than just financials.  they are becoming and will become strategic partners in the corporate world.

mcpa, I would add an MBA from an Ivy League School. An MBA from the school in THE-MIDDLE-OF-NOWHERE will be just for fun. The graduates of University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Harvard, etc. get offers with the starting salary of $100,000 and more. The questions is whether you can handle the responsibility. I can't. I am sure that I could get into Northwestern (I live nearby), but I just don't see myself being in the top-management. My Mom had 400 subordinates (she was a CEO), but she has been a leader since preschool. I've always tried to be invisible. :-) I used to be a manager (tiny one, with 4 people to manage), and it was too stressful for me. So, I prefer to be a professional without dealing with somebody's problems.
