what does the becker book mean when it states gain/loss or whatever is recognized in earnings? Does that mean "statement of retained earnings" or does that mean "income statement". i'm assuming RE but i'm not sure. sometimes the book is too vague. please help. thanks.

It means Income statement. Gains and losses are recognized in Income statement.
