I just passed all 4 sections of Florida CPA exam and just got FL CPA application package. FL changed rule at the end of 2008 and required one year of work experience for CPA license. I do not have any public accounting experience and never worked under a CPA's supervision. Does anyone know how the FL new rule will affect my license application. Thanks!

http://www.myflorida.com/dbpr/cpa/licensure.html

"Florida CPA examination candidates who pass the examination in accordance with Florida’s rules are automatically mailed a CPA licensure package by the Florida Board of Accountancy. Applicants must apply for licensure within one year of receiving the licensure package. If an applicant does not apply for licensure within this one year period, CPA examination grades expire and the applicant must reapply and retake the CPA examination. Furthermore, applicants will be required to meet the education requirements in effect at the time of the new application.

To successfully obtain an original license a candidate must

  • Submit CPA Original Licensure application and $50.00 nonrefundable fee within one year of receipt
  • Score 80% (20 out of 25) on the Florida Laws and Rules Examination
  • *Evidence one year of acceptable work experience.
  • Submit official transcripts evidencing completion of a baccalaureate degree, plus an additional 30 semester hours/45 quarter hours of education in excess of the baccalaureate degree to include 12 semester hours/18 quarter hours of upper division accounting and 15 semester/22 quarter hours of upper division general business courses."

From my understanding is that your going to have to wait one year to get your license.  You need to work under the supervision of a cpa with a current license from the state of Florida.  Once that is complete you can send that part in.  I would look into the actual date that you completed the 4 sections and Ethics exam and compare that to the date the work experience recquirement changed (not sure if you have some wiggle room in there).  Also - call the state board of accountancy also to verify.

"The sequence of the experience is considered immaterial, that is, whether the experience was secured before or after taking the examination, or partly before the examination and partly after the examination, provided the two periods combined equal at least one year."

Thanks everyone for the reply. Not every candidate has experience in public accounting firm and not every candidate has ever worked under a CPA's supervision. I passed AUD on 01/09/09, REG on 11/24/08, FAR on 05/24/08 and BEC on 08/27/07. I met the 18 months rule.
