I have an ms in accounting and 10 years of experience in finance and accounting - 4 yrs were spent preparing/reviewing taxes and providing financial advisory services where my former boss was a tax attorney.
I recently contacted him to request that a cpa from the firm sign off, but he is checking with the firm's HR dept to determine if it's possible, since the attorney was the person who signed off on my work. I'm guessing that HR will say "no".
I also have approx 1 year of work experience in private industry as a staff accountant, but my supervisor was not a licensed cpa either. He holds a certificate from the state of CT (2 tier state).
I do have 6 mos of auditing experience for a gov't agency, and have been supervised by a cpa while here, and this would be fine if I were to stay for another 6 mos. I recently accepted an offer from the federal govt where it is possible that my next supervisor will not be a cpa.
I want to have the license, but I'm fearful that I may not be able to right away in NYS. I need a total of 12 mos experience verified by a cpa. I'm thinking of applying in the State of Washington since it appears that I can have a CPA verify my experience even if they did not supervise me. Eventually I would transfer the license from Washington to NYS.
Has anyone else taken this route?
