I don't know about New York, but Arkansas requires you to apply for your license within 3 years of passing the exam, before you lose your credits. If you call the state board or look at NASBA's website (I think NY is a NASBA state?), you will probably find what you need :)

I also passed all four parts of the exam in NY and I asked the very same question to NYSED.
My question:
"Customer By Web Form (_____) - 11/26/2010 07:58 PM Once a
candidate passes all four sections of the CPA exam, do the credits ever
expire? Is there a law that requires a candidate to acquire necessary
work experience within certain period of time before the CPA exam credits expire?"
The answer:
"Response (_____) - 11/29/2010 02:34 PM Credit for the full
examination does not expire. There is no time limit within which one
must complete the necessary work experience."
