Can someone tell me if I can call myself a CPA on my resume, given the following facts & circumstances?
-- I live and work in Florida, as a CFO for a small company. -- However, I applied for CPA certification in Iowa. Why in the world in Iowa? Because it is one of the few states that doesn't require you to have audit experience. I've worked in industry all my life, never as an auditor, and I don't intend to ever be an auditor. -- I am not planning to move to Iowa either. -- So, here I am, in sunny FL, I passed all 4 parts of the exam, and I got my shiny Iowa CPA certification. -- I don't intend to do attestation work, tax work, or any other "public accounting" work. I just want to make my resume stronger, since many companies prefer candidates with CPAs.
So, the question is: can I call myself a CPA on my resume? Could I say "CPA (out of state)" for added clarity?
If you have your CPA certificate you are a CPA. If you are inactive, you are still a CPA.
Licensing is a separate issue. You should, disclose to the employer that if you were licensed in Iowa you will need to meet certain requirements before you can get licensing in Florida (if that's the case).

rayparlour is right. Since you are not licensed IN Florida and you desire to use the title CPA IN Florida, you cannot put CPA on any reports that you sign off b/c you are not licensed in Florida. As long as you are doing business in Florida, you have to apply for reciprocity (Which doesn't make sense since you are residing in Florida) in order to be a CPA IN Florida.
So technically, you are a CPA, but you cannot use the designation in Florida since you have not applied for reciprocity and have not fulfilled Florida's jurisdictional requirements.
