I'm wondering if I should continue with my CIA plans before the CPA, or if I should ditch the CIA altogether.
I'm working full-time right now in Quality Assurance at a financial software firm. I'm taking the last two classes needed to sit for the CPA exam (Advanced & Audit). The QA experience counts towards the CIA work experience, so that was the main reason why I thought about getting it. I also am hoping it will serve as a bridge between what I'm doing now and an accounting position in the future. Classes count toward a MS Accounting. I will finish both my Master's degree and 24 months of experience right at the end of May 2011, so at that point I would be able to put CIA after my name. I'd also be just 12 months away from CPA.
Should I bother with the CIA? Would it really help me transition, or am I kidding myself? I don't think it would be that difficult to do and I could probably have it all done before I want to start studying for the CPA this year, plus there will be a little bit of overlap between the two.
Career-wise, I'm not sure what is going to go on. I've read a lot about forensic accounting and it has a lot of my interests put together. I also love the idea of becoming a CFO one day. Either way, I'm confident that I want to secure an auditing position asap. Thanks in advance!

Cstrunk, I can talk only from my personal experience, but my feeling is that you don't need the CIA license if you are a CPA. The CPA is much better recognized and has more weight than the CIA. The CPA license should be more than enough for any transition into the accounting/auditing field.
I would say you can easily be done with the CIA within 2-8 month. It's a little tricky, but there is nothing difficult per se. You should consider that you wouldn't need to take the 4th part of the CIA exam once you become a CPA.
I try to study for the CIA exam, but it's so much more boring than the CPA that I am often playing with the idea of not doing it at all (I'm a CPA).
