Fairly comparable to difficulty level of live & online courses. You're just playing with the double-edged sword of autonomous time-discretion. It's worked well for me thus far--but not quite so well with current course (Advanced)--I think I'm finally burning out from school :)
I read each chapter at least twice; put sufficient effort into the lessons to do well; go back and thoroughly review each of the lessons (returned with professor's remarks) for each respective exam. After taking LSU's auditing, I took auditing as part of my MBA program and did fine.
Online for LSU (as for the independent study ACCT courses I've had) simply means you have the option of submitting lessons online. You do not have classmates. On the few occasions I've had questions, I've found the professors helpful.
I say they're not too difficult for anyone with an aptitude for ACCT. However, they are time-consuming and require comparable effort as live courses. You just have more flexibility in deciding when to expend the effort :)
