This question is for Nan-Louisiana, but if anyone else knows that is or has recently gone through the CPA license application process in Louisiana, please let me know.  I'm currently taking the CPA exam (1 down, 3 to go).  My current situation as far as the experience under an active CPA is the following:

My former manager (CPA) quit in 2006 and my current manager is not a CPA.  I believe I read that the requirement is that a CPA license candidate must have worked for 1 year under a CPA within the last 4 years.  Is that correct?  If so, is that from the date you passed the last part of the exam or is it from when the CPA license application is submitted/processed? 

I'm hoping that I won't run into a problem with my experience expiring, but it definitely has crossed my mind.  I did notice from another thread that Nan-Louisiana said that you could have your Independent Auditor sign off for this requirement.  I'd like to get a little more clarification on that because I have another situation where my company has just recently changed Independent Auditors from the one we had for the passed 4 years.  I'm an Internal Auditor, and they do review my work (SOX testing) regularly, so I assume that would be okay under the experience requirement, right?

I know this a weird situation.  I would greatly appreciate any feedback.

Hi, new Dad.  Welcome and good luck.

I got my information from the State Board of CPAs of Louisiana.

When you go to that website, click on "Contact Us" then scroll down for the name and phone number of the man who handles CPA License Applications.  Last year when I initially applied to take the exams, and again about two weeks ago, he told me that the one-year experience requirement for my Louisiana license application could be signed off by a licensed CPA from any state, but s/he had to be either my supervisor or the Independent Auditor who examined our company books.

Here is the Lousiana license application (you find it in the Forms section of the Louisiana website):

If my experience requirement is signed by the Independent Auditor, s/he has to write a brief letter stating the following: state that s/he had audited our books, state the years s/he performed the audits, and describe the extent of the interaction s/he had with me.  My supervisor (in my case, a CPA with an inactive license) then needs to provide a separate letter filling in the gaps: job title(s), detailed descriptions of of duties and experience, and type of work (accounting, attest, management advisory, financial advisory, tax or consulting).

The time requirement is: "at least one year of experience must be confirmed that was within four years preceding the date of this application."

I did ask whether another licensed CPA besides our Independent Auditor, one who was familiar with my employment and experience, could sign on my behalf.  The scenario under consideration was to continue in my present position, and work part-time on the side for another active CPA.  I was told, "Don't."  I would have to start again from the beginning on the time requirement if I did that.

Thank you very much for your timely reply Nan-Louisiana.    Great information!

By the way, congrats on passing the CPA exam!  I bet it's an amazing feeling.  I'm a CIA and CFE and I'll tell you, the CFE exam is a 1st grade spelling test (okay, maybe a 4th grade spelling test) compared to the CPA exam.  The CFE exam review contains extremely interesting subject material, if you haven't already noticed during your studying. 

Seeing your results from the CPA exam, I'm very confident you'll have absolutely know problem passing the CFE exam with high marks.

Your compliments are flattering.  I'm looking forward to becoming a CPA/CFE.  My gut feeling is that those certifications will keep me busily and happily employed for a long time to come.  One of the two senior electives I took last year at LSU to qualify for the CPA exam was "Introduction to Fraud Examination."  That's how I got interested in it.

If you're amenable to a sideline correspondence, I'd love to get more information on the CFE.  I have the ACFE website address and am looking at the certification exam prep materials they offer, but I haven't acquired them yet.  I've been busy cleaning up the piles of work I set aside to pass the CPA exams.  That will keep me busy for another month or so, and then I'll be ready to actually start looking at the CFE exam prep.

I'm particularly interested in information about what kind of work you do as a CFE, for whom and where.  I need to build a plan for getting the certification.  Passing the CFE exam is a first obviously, but I need to be thinking about the work experience requirement.  Where I work I don't do much that could be considered CFE work.  However I expect to be changing jobs in about a year since the place where I work will be closing (the boss is retiring).

If I'm not mistaken, the only CFE review is the one that the ACFE puts out (about $1K if I remember right, which includes the exam fee).  It contains software (which includes MC?'s, Practice exams, and the ACTUAL EXAM).  You take the exam through the software.

Once you're ready to take the CFE Exam, you open that portion of the software (must be online), and take the exam in the comfort of your own home, office, etc.  That's right, the exam is not taken at a testing center.  There are 4 parts to the exam (you can take one at a time, but you only have 30 days to complete all parts).  All parts are graded at the same time.

Work experience:

I'm an Internal Auditor for a casino (4 years).  My auditing experience fit the fraud detection experience requirement.  As part of my job duties, I perform operational, regulatory, and other special projects audits.  These special projects include fraud investigations when necessary, as well as fraud detection audits. 

Did you take any classes from Dr. Sumners at LSU?  I took a couple of CIA exam prep courses from him and they were awesome!
