Hello,
I would like to know what is everybody's opinion about taking accounting courses at a community college. I graduated with a BBA degree in Finance and have taken the minimum required hours for accounting to graduate. I have since learned the minimum requirement to sit for the CPA exam is 30 hours of accounting. Since I do not have the 30 hours I have learned you can take these courses at a pre-approved community college. Is it worthwhile to take these courses at community college or should I pay more and enroll in the CPA certificate program that is available at the local university in my town? I'm also interested to see if anybody has taken accounting courses at a community college and do they feel it helped them prepare for the CPA exam?
Thanks in advance!

I took just about all of my classes at a community college in Austin, TX. Since the college is in Austin, the quality of classes is much better than at a normal community college. In fact, the two classes that I took at lower ranked four year schools were easier! I felt very well prepared from my classes, and as you can see, I've passed two parts so far on my first attempts. Austin Community College has the third highest pass rate on the CPA exam in the state of Texas. The downside of going to a community college though is that you miss out on on campus recruiting. If you really want to work for the big 4, then this is not a great route to go. Whether the classes will be good or not depends on how good the community college is. Community colleges in yuppie places like Austin, San Francisco, etc. tend to be better.

I also took a bunch of community college courses to fulfill the accounting requirements. The school offered many courses online as well. The community colleges in silicon valley are good and inexpensive.

I started with the community college too, then went to 4-year school. However, the only accounting classes they offered at my community college were the Fin. Acctng and Managerial Acctng. Only those two. Other accounting classes, such as Intermediate I and II, Taxation, Audit, Governmental, etc, I had to get at the university because they normally don't offer them at the community colleges. But your community college might be different though. Good Luck!
