Here's my situation.  I have a bachelors in Management with an accounting concentration from DeVry University.  I have been accepted to several Macc programs at respectable universities.  However, I also have an opportunity to get a second bachelors in accounting from a very respectable Tier 1 school.  I'm going to get my masters regardless.  Would my DeVry bachelors and Macc (possibly MBA) be as marketable as a bachelors and Macc, both from very good schools?  I would probably keep my DeVry degree off my resume if I had my second bachelors, since it is a much much better school.  Also, I will be sitting for the CPA exam, so hopefully I can add that to the resume.  Any and all advice would be great.

Just a side note, I understand I can go for the Macc right now, but it's also kind of a personal preferance and just something I want to do for myself to have a more marketable bachelors.  Please, let me know what anyone thinks and what suggestions you might have.

Wow, you sure you wanna go through all of the troubles of a second bachelor? If it's not too many credits to earn for a second bachelor, and if you have money, then the second option (second bachelor degree plus Macc) is definitely more marketable. However, make sure that you mentally are prepared for such an endeavor. Trust me. DeVry is nothing like an accy program at good traditional college. So just be prepared.

If you go for the 2nd BS, how many credits will you be able to transfer in?  I am also doing a 2nd BS, but my first one is not in accounting.  It's actually a paralegal degree from Kaplan.

I have some experience in this area. I had a BS in Biology in 1981 from Long Island University, not a great school. In order to get a job I went back for a BSEE from a much better school. After the first semester, since my grades were pretty good, they offered to move me into a Masters program in Electrical Engineering. I was advised that a BS would serve me better. Did it? I don't really agree. I never reaslly worked designing circuits. I worked on the software side of high tech but did work for companies in Silicon Valley.

I think that getting a masters in EE without a BS in EE would have been rediculously hard. We're not talking basket weaving here. I was somewhat sorry that I didn't have a masters degree. All of the people coming from India have BS degrees from local  Indian Univs. In order to Americanize their credentials they need to get a masters from a US school. For you, without a masters, I think your career will be severly hampered. BTW, in 2005 after 20 years of being out of engineering school I went back to get an MBA in accounting. Getting a 3rd BS in accounting would have been a huge mistake.

To answer all of you:  I will have to take 48 credit hours through the school.  It is their minimum requirement, and that should be all I have to take.  So, I am looking at 1 1/2 to 2 years.

And yes, I agree that accounting from a traditional, good school is not the same as DeVry.  That is also another reason I want the second bachelors.  Although I had an accounting concentration, and I know some of the information, I don't feel one bit confident about sitting for the CPA exam.  Also, I feel like I didn't learn everything that I should have through DeVry.  Don't get me wrong, still a challenging program (at times), but just not designed for what I want to achieve.

That kind of goes with why I would rather get a second bachelors in accounting before a Macc.  I think I would truly struggle through a Macc program right now.
