Does anyone else have this problem where you'll read something and not understand it? It often takes me at LEAST 3 times to read something in order to understand it. This has been my problem since elementary school. However, I find if it's about something I enjoy, I comprehend it the first time. I've just never enjoyed school textbooks...and well, the CPA books are just that, even more. It's just frustrasting that other exam candidates can pass studying say 100 hours for BEC and it will take me triple that time. I feel like my brain takes longer to process things. Also, I feel when I read something objective, I will overanalyze what I'm reading and question it (thereby taking longer to understand something that's supposed to be straight forward. I can't just take something for what it says). Any tips, help? Thanks.

you just described me to a t. i too struggle with reading boring material and understanding it, always have always will. i can read a topic in the book over 3x and still get the answer wrong. for me, everything starts to click when i start working mcq, this is when i see how the concepts are applied. also, i can see how they attack 1 concept 10 different ways...it may take us 3x longer to study but if that's what it takes, so be it!!!
The good news is that whenever I have trouble sleeping, I just pull out my Becker books. Never fails!
What helps for me is to learn the bulk through doing questions over and over. Then re-read the material. It is easier to read once you have a bit of an understanding from doing mc.

mkcpa1986, Dude, you just described my issue exactly and just like nolifecpa I also have to do many mcq in order for me to understand how they apply the concept and finally I understand it. In other standardized exams, like when I sat for my series 7 or the IRS EA exam, I would leave the question and come back to it and re-read it and that is when I comprehend it. However, when I tried to do the same thing on the FAR exam there was just not enough time. skooby, I'm studying right now for BEC using Kaplan, they had an offer to get BEC material for free at one point earlier in the year, and I'm reading their slides. Within the slides there are mcq. I don't know if that is going to be any good, but I will certainly update you all on how I feel when I start taking practice questions.
Good luck to you all!!
