Hello dear forum members,

I have a friend who earned General Business degree (BA) in foreign
country. Now he is thinking about taking the classes which are required
for CPA as non-degree student (just taking some classes to qualify for the
exam)

a minimum of 24 semester hours in accounting (Financial/managerial acc,
cost, tax, audit, etc).

a minimum of 24 semester hours in general business subjects such as
business law, algebra, calculus, statistics, economics, finance,
management, marketing, computer and information systems, ethics and
business communications type classes can come from his foreign degree
which he will be evaluating through evaluation organizations.

Is it doable? Do you know anybody who has done the same?

this way, he would save some time and money. Instead of preparing for
GMAT to do masters in accounting, he could take just a required classes
to sit for CPA + his foreign bachelor degree.

Any feeback or suggestions? is it doable? or is it better to do masters
intead?

I've never been through that process but...

I would think normally a general business degree will not have 24 hours in accounting.

Maybe his other business credits will transfer but he will still have to take the accounting credits.

yes what he is thinking about doing is:

getting his Bachelor Diploma evaluated through accredited orgs like ECE -
hopefully 24 hr business credits come from his foreign business degree

he is planning to take:
Financial/Managerial Acc - probably not counted since it is principle
classes

then,
Intermediate I = 3 cr hr
Intermediate II = 3 cr hr
Cost = 3 cr hr
Tax= 3 cr hr
Audit = 3 cr hr
Adv. Accounting=3 cr hr
Adv. tax or adv audit= 3 cr hr
not for profit/gov accounting= 3 cr hr

he is hoping that he can take those classes as non-degree student and to
qualify to sit for the CPA exam after finishing them.

I was suggesting him to take the GMAT first and get enrolled for Masters
in Accounting program. but, he is very concerned about saving some prep
time and money. Instead of preparing for GMAt, he can start taking those
classes now, and once he is done with them, he can spend the saved time
and money for the preparation for CPA exam. What do you think about
that? Which option would you go for if you are in the same situation like
his?

Once you pass the CPA, it doesn't matter if u have a general business
degree or specific accounting bachelor degree or Accounting Masters
degree, does it????

for me Masters in accounting + CPA would the best choice though

any comments?

I did exactly what you are describing.  My background:

I graduated with a degree in Economics and started working for a bank.  After about 5 years I decided to switch to an accounting career and went back to school soley to take the classes that were necessary to sit for the CPA.  My thought process was that if I was going to stay in the accounting field that the CPA was more important than a master's degree.  In earning my economics degree, I satisfied all of the requirements except the accounting courses, similar to your buddy.

The only downside was that when going back to school, I had to take all accounting courses in the same semester which was pretty hard.  You do not have the luxury of mixing some fluff courses like Marketing, Management, etc.  so tell your friend it will not be easy.

But it worked out okay for me, I am a CPA and got 4 yrs big 4 experience under my belt.  So it can be done.
