Sorry for posting another similar question, but I am having the same issue on trying to decide which direction to focus on. I am 44 years of age and my wife and I went back to school on January 2007 to further our education.  Since January 2007 I completed my BS in General Business at Excelsior College on August 2009 and my CPCU designation in September 2010.  It was not until I started working on my CPCU and nine accounting units from my undergraduate degree that got me interested on looking at graduate accounting programs.

After I completed my CPCU I started getting really frustrated because I do not want my 18 years of insurance claims to go to waste, but also don't want to be an adjuster the rest of my life.  At the same time while taking some CPCU courses I started having an interest in auditing and financial analyst for an insurance company. Instead of going straight into an MS in Accounting I ended up enrolling at Davenport University's MBA in Accounting, because the program has 21 to 24 units of graduate accounting.  This program also gives me the option if I want to get into management in my current profession that the MBA could be beneficial to my career and also have the option to take the CPA exam.

After I completed both Financial Management and Org. Development & Culture at Davenport, I started looking at Liberty University's MS in Accounting program. Several reasons for this. I am an army veteran and get discounts to both schools. Davenport Tuition is $398 per unit, however, Liberty is only $250 per unit for the program.  Also, I do not know how important taking Intermediate Accounting I & II, and other undergraduate accounting courses prior to taking graduate accounting. In my undergraduate classes I took 4sh financial acct, 4sh managerial acct, and 1 unit acct ethics.  I am seriously considering beckers after I complete my graduate degree. I also want to the option of teaching part-time insurance, risk management, and acct classes part time after I graduate.

Below is the list of courses for each program. With Davenport there are 21 to 24 acct classes.  For Liberty University, I would have to take 15 undergraduate units (5 classes) and 24 graduate courses to complete the MS in Accounting.  With Liberty University tuition is only 250 per unit and amount of accounting units, one side of my brain says I can get into a good MBA program later and less time to study for CPA if I decide to pursue this. The other side says I have no plans to do public accounting and would rather do auditing, but have the option to get into management in the future and get the best of both worlds with MBA in Accounting at Davenport.

I am really sorry for this long post and hoping to receive some constructive feedback to assist on what route to take.

MSA is good enough for accounting profession.  If you want to move on to something better, then its Top MBA or BUST.   Go for the MSA, you want to keep your options open.  (Can't do MBA twice!)

Highly agree with the comments.  Top msa - big four or bust.    then if you still want better, Top MBA or BUST!

Some feedback on Liberty:

I've completed 7 of the 10 courses required in the Liberty MSA
program so far. I'm not sure if this is true of most MSA programs but at
Liberty the program isn"t so much about learning accounting (debits
credits etc). The program focuses on research, theory and writing.

It's been a good experience. I recommend the program based on cost,
8 week classes, online format, good instructors. The classes are
challenging as there are exams, research papers, projects, and weekly
writing assingments with APA citing using peer reviewed articles to
back up your statements. I'm completing the program to satisfy the
CPA 150 hr requirement. Good luck,
