They hire a third party to do background checks. They mainly look at your credit history and whether you have a criminal record... stuff like that.

none of my work experiences are with relevant to accounting... do they ask for references so they can connect my previous employers?

When they do a background check, they might get the full version (including past work experience). This includes your salary, dates you've worked, and your title.
You don't really need accounting experience to get into the Big 4. My friend worked at a sporting goods store and got offered a job from every Big 4. That was the only work experience he had.
