Maybe his offer is in advisory or consulting and the CPA isn't required for that?

Well, the big 4s take in even those from engineering and computer courses without any background in accounting. It's helpful to know the accounting entries but not necessary, to be an auditor. FS is as relevant as accounting in audit. And if the location is the capital of the country/financial hub of the region, then it's even more useful to have a major in FS with some basic accounting knowledge than just accounting degree. I think It's not your degree but how you present yourself and how well you do in interview that matters really.
What position did you apply for? External auditor? Consultant? With the peak period approaching, shouldn't be hard to get the external audit roles esp in areas like NY..
