I am interested in thoughts by those who have used Gleim about how likely I am to successfully pass each exam on the first try if I am dedicated and follow their program to the tee. I have heard the comments of many (both on here, and from talking to acquaintances) who have had trouble passing using Gleim but in many cases they have not used the materials fully.

I have had the Gleim materials for almost a year, and I am finally getting started. Before I expend alot of energy, and time I want to make sure that it is highly likely that I will pass each exam on the first try if I follow the Gleim program explicitly. As I understand it, the basics of their program is:

Study each of the 20 study units for the exam within an 8-week (or less) period.

Spend at least 10 hrs per week studying.

For each study unit:

Online Quiz
Review Quiz answers
Audiovisual presentation of topic
T/F Quiz
Study the Knowledge Transfer Outline
Online Quiz #2
Review Quiz answers
Take at least 2 20-question test-prep quizzes (test mode)
Simulation & review

In addition, they recommend reviewing their "System for Success" guide prior to taking the test for test tips and time management. They also suggest the use of notes, especially in areas of difficulty, and the use of flash cards for elements that need to be memorized.

If I truly follow all of this, will I be fairly assured of success? What are your thoughts?

Also any thoughts on what scores I should strive for on the test prep multiple choices before I feel ready to take the test?

Note: I consider myself generally intelligent, but have been out of school for 15 years, and much of this looks pretty foreign to me. Of course there are areas that I use in my work, but its been pretty light on GAAP issues throughout my career. I am willing to put in a couple of extra hours per week to make up for any of these deficiencies.

Nutty,

I am not using Gleim exclusively, but have utilized the test prep CD rom for both REG and AUD. I feel like the CD is probably the most beneficial study tool that I have right now. Since I can't comment on Gleim's overall program I will stick to a couple of specific points of your post.

-After putting in some time studying you will be better able to answer this question based on how prepared you feel personally.

"Spend at least 10 hrs per week studying."

-Would depend on how many total weeks you have to prepare, but would personally recommend more if possible.

"Also any thoughts on what scores I should strive for on the test prep multiple choices before I feel ready to take the test?"

-I shoot for consistent scores in the 85%-100& range in the week leading up to the test. It is also important to make sure that you understand why an answer is correct and not just remember the correct answers. You might encounter similar questions on the exam that test the same concepts in similar ways, but not identical.

Nutty,

I have used Gleim and I've been removed from school for 4 years. I think their system is very good, but sometimes the reading material is over my head. I think Gleim makes a few too many assumptions about base-line knowledge. Getting over this just takes some time with the MCQ's and reading the explanations to understand why something is right and wrong. I've also heard that Gleim tends to cover more material than necessary...I can't attest to that since Gleim is the only tool I've used. I can say that there has not been a question on either FAR or BEC that has been ount of "left field."

I got a 74 on FAR and completed the 90% requirement. I was running between 65-70% on the MCQ's. I am confident that Gleim is sufficient to pass all 4 parts. Be sure to utilize the test-prep cd; it helps me a lot in study mode because I can see the answer right away instead of waiting and forgetting my thought process.

I work full time and had put in 10-15 hours per week. I now strive for 15-20.

Although I am supplementing FAR and REG with Yeager because those parts make me nervous, I have yet to fail an exam by using just Gleim. That includes four CMA exams and the BEC portion of the CPA. I basically only used Gleim for the AUD portion also because although I did purchase and watch the Yeager cram for AUD, I didn't learn a ton I didn't already know and I'm sure I would have passed with Gleim alone.
