Hi all,

So I got Becker self-study for my review. When I ordered, the sales rep made a big deal about using the '09 versions of Becker for the 09 exams, and studying for the 2010 exams using the '10 version. So I got FAR and REG 09 versions, since I plan to take either FAR or REG in Oct., and then the other one in Jan.

My question is, which of the 2 should I take first, and w/c should I take in Jan.? Will I be okay studying for a Jan 2010 exam using 2009 materials? I'm assuming that I should take REG in Oct 2009 since tax laws change every year, but will any accounting regulations for FAR be changing in time for Jan 2010? My 2009 REG and FAR review materials cannot be updated beyond 12/31/09. Any input/advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I think they just told you that so that when 2010 rolls around, you will buy 2010 also. Is 2009 cheaper than the 2010 right now?

Thanks Divya! So basically if I'm understanding this right, any changes in tax law or accounting rules won't be testable until 6 months after they come into effect. Since I plan to take both REG and FAR by January (w/c is less than 6 months from now), it doesn't matter which I take first.

2010 isn't available until early December. Both are the same price I think; they discontinue selling the '09 version once the '10 version becomes available. But since I plan to take my 2nd test during the 1st week of January, receiving the 2010 version in mid-Dec (after shipping time) won't give me enough time to study for either REG or FAR, w/c is why I have to use the '09 version...

Bruin, my guess is that the 2009 version material you currently bought has the changes which happened upto last year as they usually print the next year's edition in Nov/Dec.

Unfortunately, even if it is less than 6 months to your exam, be it any section, you would have to manually update the material with the updates they issue separately on their site:

http://beckerkb.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/beckerkb.cfg/php/enduse r/std_alp.php?p_sid=-Ywl38Fj&p_accessibility=0&p_red irect=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBf cm93X2NudD0yOSwyOSZwX3Byb2RzPSZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9JnBfY3Y9JnBf c2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTE *

You can check the updates and proceed accordingly. The software may already be updated (pass master, lecture, final exams, sims), however, textbook may be not.

I would advise you to verify all the changes. Do let know in case you face any more doubts. I know it's highly important that our study material should be updated as per latest changes which are testable !

In fact, try to call up the Becker representative and verify about the updated material.... I bought my 2009 edition material last year in mid Dec and I had to update all changes which happened in 2009 and testable at the time of my exam.
